I'm a Maine native, and I graduated in 1972 from Kennebunk High School. In 1976, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and completed a second major in Literary Criticism at University of New Hampshire. Next, I studied Animal Pathology at UM, before relocating to Vermont, where I managed a Burlingtion pet store for two years. In 1981, I returned to Maine and earned my Master of Arts in Composition at Orono. In 1984, I married and moved to Indiana, where I began a PhD in Rhetoric at Purdue University. After two years, we "came back east" so I could accept the new position of Writing Center Director at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York. We spent three years there before finally settling in Sabattus, Maine in 1989. I then worked as a technical writer until University of Maine at Augusta hired me in 1991. In January of 1996, Bob and I traveled to Russia to adopt our daughter, Tatyana. And, in December of 2001, we moved to Skowhegan, where we reside today in a log cabin on 6 acres of pines, with our dogs Kodiac and Shyloh, and our parrots Babe, Indigo and Frican. I have a passion for animals, both domestic and wild, the ocean (born on the coast), the outdoors and books naturally-what english teacher doesn't.
